Reading Group: Kate Hennessy on Maps and Dreams
SAT, JUL 15 2017 / 2PM
Audain Gallery

This event will approach the subject of Dane-zaa dream maps through oral and written texts. Lead by Kate Hennessy, participants will read aloud from sections of Hugh Brody’s Maps and Dreams that relate specifically to dream maps. The group will listen to recordings of Dane-zaa elders speaking in Dane-zaa Záágé? and English about the significance of these maps. No preparation required.

Hennessy is an Assistant Professor at SFU’s School of Interactive Arts and Technology. She is the director of Making Culture Lab and member of the Ethnographic Terminalia Curatorial Collective. Her research examines the role of digital technology in the documentation, mediation and safeguarding of cultural heritage.

Maps and Dreams
Jun 1 - Jul 29, 2017
Audain Gallery

Jack Askoty, Brittney and Richelle Bear Hat, Jennifer Bowes, Brenda Draney, Emilie Mattson, Karl Mattson, Garry Oker, Peter von Tiesenhausen

Maps and Dreams is a group exhibition of work by contemporary artists that explores conceptions and implications of land use through cultural and industrial lenses. The exhibition specifically considers the territory of the Dane-zaa people of northeastern British Columbia, now in Treaty 8. Borrowing the title from Hugh Brody’s book Maps and Dreams, a 1981 anthropological study of the Dane-zaa, the exhibition includes work by artists who consider how this land and its intersection with human use is articulated, represented and contested.

Cathy Busby: WE CALL

Cathy Busby: WE CALL
May 20, 2017 - Apr 28, 2018
Teck Gallery

Cathy Busby edits and re-composes public documents to provoke close readings of how speech acts and linguistic gestures are enacted and circulated. She has produced text-based installations and printed matter that draw attention to the ways that governments obfuscate their accountability towards Indigenous rights and title in public address, policy and service. This series includes We Are Sorry (2008-10), Budget Cuts (2012), Cut and Muzzled (2014) and Taking Up the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Calls to Action (2016).

In dialogue with these works, WE CALL is composed of selections from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) 94 "Calls to Action". This document accompanies the 500-page report that synthesizes the TRC's inquiry into the inter-generational legacy of Canada's Indian Residential School System. Busby's selections highlight the ways that governmental, educational and cultural institutions are called on by the TRC to cultivate Indigenous leadership, stewardship and participation within structural systems. Through patterning and repetition, Busby's vivid floor-to-ceiling text painting makes these calls visible and persistent in the intellectual, social and bureaucratic life of SFU.

The work's title, WE CALL, abbreviates the address of each call to action to emphasize the mutual responsibility of the caller(s) to participate in enacting these structural shifts. In the coming year, Busby will collaborate with SFU faculty and students from disciplines frequently addressed in the document to talk about how they can take up the TRC's calls to action through curriculum, critical dialogue and engaged learning.

WE CALL at the Teck Gallery parallels Busby's collaboration with the Gitksan Wet'suwet'en Education Society in Hazelton, BC to produce an iteration of the wall text painting on their campus.

Busby is a Canadian artist and activist based in Vancouver. Since the 1980s, her practice has addressed local political conditions and social structures as they express critical global issues. Busby was a Fulbright Scholar at New York University and holds a PhD in Communication from Concordia University. She is currently an Adjunct Professor of Visual Art at UBC.

For this exhibition, Maps and Dreams and Treaty 8 offer a set of cultural, historical, environmental and political markers in which the participating artists’ works are located. The works connect the personal to the regional context. The artists present Indigenous and settler perspectives, take up forms of literal and figurative mapping, and through diverse strategies and speculative inquiries, engage with a complex entanglement between multi-faceted dreams and the land.

Shaping South East Queensland is a process to integrate transport and land use into a single conversation about shaping the future of Australia’s fastest-growing region. Brisbane and South East Queensland are facing spectacular growth pressures but have discovered that the promise of motordom, in the form of numerous road tunnels, has been a rabbit hole and a chimera, not a panacea. There is a renewed focus on rapid transit, be it busways, heavy rail or light rail, as the structuring elements in a city-region that is developing a unique subtropical architectural and urban form vernacular specific to its place and context. Find out more about these exciting developments with Greg Vann, project director, Shaping South East Queensland, and a guest moderator in SFU's Next-Generation Transportation Certificate.
July 27, 1 pm PDT

Transportation infrastructure and services are often assumed to be "gender neutral," where projects and services are assumed to provide an equal benefit to men and women, and where there is no significant difference in travel patterns, modes of access or participation in project planning, design and maintenance. In fact, when transportation data is disagreggated by gender, what becomes visible is how transportation policies affect women and men differently. In this webinar, SFU's Tiffany Muller Myrdahl will explain the use of disaggregated data to highlight gendered transportation patterns and discuss how gendered experience shapes transit use. Most importantly, this webinar will focus on what transportation planners and decision-makers need to know to develop policies that improve equity in access and provision of services. Moderated by Tara Gallen of City of Vancouver and instructor in SFU's Next-Generation Transportation Certificate.

Tiffany Muller Myrdahl is senior lecturer in Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies and Urban Studies at Simon Fraser University.

Two years ago Edmonton was ripping out on street cycle lanes. A year ago they were working on their first major on-road protected cycleways but at a glacially slow pace. This year, with unanimous support from the city council, they are implementing in one go a downtown cycle grid due for completion in August where the final product is the consultation material—to be tested out and if necessary modified in real time. Learn about this amazing cultural change and how cycling infrastructure can be implemented at speed, from Tyler Golly who headed sustainable transportation at the City of Edmonton and subsequently led the development of the Downtown Bike Grid plan at Stantec.
